Have you ever heard of a plane leaving an airport with no final destination planned? Or, a plane taking off without a flight plan completed and filed? Or, a boat leaving dock with no particular plan for making it back safely?
Do you think the folks at Google start everyday without a plan to fulfill their vision? Do you think Henry Schein came to dominate the dental world without a strategic vision outlined and followed? Or, take my friend and Gold Member, Dr. John Busby…did he build his multi-doctor/multi-location dental empire by accident and without a clear vision?
You see, it’s hard to know what to do on a daily, weekly or monthly basis if you don’t have a vision for the outcome. And, unless you have a vision written down, you don’t know if what you’re doing daily fits the vision, right? It goes further. Unless you have one written down and shared with those around you to enroll them in that vision and assign areas of responsibility to help you achieve that vision, nothing will happen; at least nothing right will happen.
Here’s the thing…You might not think I’m talking about you. But, I can guarantee, that for over 95% of you reading this, you could not outline for me what your vision for your future in business (or personally) really looks like. You could not recite it upon me asking, “Hey Doc, what’s your vision look like?”
So when an employee asks you, “Doc, what is your vision for this practice?” you really cannot answer. And, if I’m an employee looking for a new home, how it that going to get me excited if I don’t know what you want or how you’re going to get there or even more important, WHY your vision is what it is!?
Don’t feel alone; I’m not trying to beat you up, but rather, expose a weakness that may be causing you issues and you are unaware! I come across this more often than I should and maybe it’s time for the conversation to start taking place not just in your mind, but in your organization, too?
Unless and until you have a clear vision for what you want from practice, from your business, from those around you, you’re going to be mired in never-ending minutae and bullshi*. It will keep you from achieving your goals and dreams and fulfilling your vision.

- Dream big, and focus on success.
- Use the present tense.
- Use clear, concise language.
- Infuse your vision statement with passion and emotion.
- Paint a graphic mental picture of the business you want.
I can’t think of a better place to start, personally, than right there. Get your vision down. Then, I encourage you to share that vision with your key team members initially to get buy-in, feedback and help. Get them enrolled in your vision and give your team the tools they need to help you reach that magic point!Get clarity on what you want and then reverse engineer how to get yourself there.
